Changing

While out walking, look for things that change. Trash teaches excellent lessons. There is the rusting metal of abandoned cars, discarded furniture (cushions, mattresses, lawn chairs), rubber tires, plastic, glass. This can lead into a discussion of how She changes things, sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly.

Rust is relatively slow, plastic very slow. Fabrics, even synthetics, change quickly because small animals take pieces to use in their nests. Plants change quickly, from day to day. Talk about examples of very fast and large changes, and ask if they can think of examples. Floods, fires, earthquakes, tornadoes change a lot of things very fast. Glaciers change things much more slowly.

Human beings change things faster and more permanently than any other being, but eventually even what they do changes and goes back into the Earth.

There is an old woman
  Who weaves the night sky
See her spin
  Watch her fingers fly

She changes everything she touches
  And everything she touches, changes
She changes everything she touches
  And everything she touches, changes
